Jim, Lisa, me, Melissa, Steve

When I came to Hawaii for continued healing and restoration, I had no idea the healing would include learning how to receive. Jim, Lisa, Melissa and Steve, because of their selfless giving during this cancer experience, have encouraged me to be a gracious receiver.  Actually, the challenge was not so much in the receiving but in the asking for my needs to be met.  That was scary. What if I ask for too much?  What I discovered was in asking my friends for what I need, I become the giver.  I give my friends the gift of allowing them to give.  As another friend said, you allow us the privilege to serve.  So who is the giver and who is the receiver?  I think we are, at once, both the giver and the receiver.

My life is graced with the support and prayers of many beautiful friends.  Jim, Lisa, Melissa and Steve stepped forward and have been involved daily in some aspect of my cancer experience.  They are unconditional in their giving.  From the beginning, they stood by ready to honor my needs. I only had to ask. They demonstrated ease in creating solutions to situations that seemed a challenge to me because I had limits to what I could ask.  They didn’t have limits to what they were willing to give.

Jim’s nickname is Mr. Wizard.  Ask, and you shall receive.  If he doesn’t know why or how, he’ll find out…within hours.  It it’s possible, he will find a way.  Lisa touches my heart every day with a call, email, text or all three.  Her desire to give is boundless.  She teaches me daily by how she opens her heart and embraces mine.  Melissa makes me smile, makes me laugh, makes me cry.  She is playful, witty and deeply compassionate.  She is uplifting.  Steve is tremendously talented with a keen, sharp mind.  This website is dynamic and functioning because of his expertise and generosity of spirit.  He is patient, kind, steady and considerate…a rock.  Together they are loyal, trustworthy, loving and committed to friendship.  They are my muses, my guiding spirits, my sources of inspiration.

Much has been expressed about friendship.  Here are some words from others that describe my precious friends:

If you’re alone, I’ll be your shadow.  If you want to cry, I’ll be your shoulder.  If you want a hug, I’ll be your pillow.  If you need to be happy, I’ll be your smile.  But anytime you need a friend, I’ll just be me.  ~Author Unknown

The best kind of friend is the one you could sit on a porch with, never saying a word, and walk away feeling like that was the best conversation you’ve had.  ~Author Unknown

It is the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter.  ~Marlene Dietrich

Piglet sidled up to Pooh from behind.  “Pooh!” he whispered.  “Yes, Piglet?”  “Nothing,” said Piglet, taking Pooh’s paw.  “I just wanted to be sure of you.”  ~A.A. Milne

Each friend represents a world in us, a world possibly not born until they arrive.  ~Anäis Nin

Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.  ~Dinah Craik

What a rich group of souls surround you! I keep meaning to tell you how calming I find your website. We had another 9 inches of snow last week and today it is “glitter ball” like the snowballs you shake and it is twinkling in the sun. I am going to get some snow shoes because I can’t walk Chloe and cross country at the same time. Wish I could package you up a few handfuls of the white stuff. At water aerobics today someone suggested to put black construction paper in the freezer and then catch the snowflakes giving you extended time to see their individual shapes. I will give that I try! Have a great day. Love, jan
